DOWNTOWN — An iconic Downtown ice rink could soon be crowned America’s best skating venue — with your help.
USA Today has named Maggie Daley Park’s Ice Skating Ribbon as a finalist for the nation’s best ice skating rink in its annual 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
The public can vote online through Dec. 9 on the contest website, with voting allowed once every 12 hours. The ribbon is the only Illinois ice rink included among the finalists.
The innovative ribbon-shaped rink — which is celebrating its 10th season — offers a unique skating experience with Downtown skyline views and space for more than 700 skaters at once.
The facility provides skate rentals, lockers and children’s skating aids. The adjacent Rink Café provides winter refreshments like hot chocolate for skaters who need a rest.
“It couldn’t be more fitting than to start our 10th season with this honor [of being nominated],” Rosa Escareño, Chicago Park District superintendent and CEO, said in a statement. “For the past decade, the ribbon has become a winter tradition for local families and tourists alike.”
The rink opens for the season Friday and operates daily, with four time slots from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Skate rentals start at $17 online and $19 for walk-up visitors, with special holiday season rates Dec. 13-Jan. 5. “Bring Your Own Skate” sessions are available for free during select times outside the holiday season. Online reservations are recommended.
The Maggie Daley Ice Skating Ribbon’s nomination was selected through editorial review by USA Today’s 10best editors, following initial recommendations from industry experts. Visit the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards website for more information about the contest and rankings.
