One of the annoyances I had with Nikon’s mirrorless system was an extremely trivial aspect of their naming conventions that the cameras had a ” ” after the Z. So it wasn’t like Canon where it was the R8, no, it was the Z 8. In a world where we hammer out these articles as fast as possible – that was annoying (and completely unnecessary). I probably got it wrong 70% of the time, because I’m like that.
DCW noticed the change with the Z50 II though, and according to a Nikon Rep;
We no longer use spaces after Z in our official naming convention. All of our Z series mirrorless cameras will now be called “Z50” and “Z30” rather than “Z 50” and “Z 30”. Therefore, the correct name for the new camera is “Z50II.”
The world rejoices.
So apparently, with the Z 50, I mean Z50II (or Z50 II), Nikon has officially stated that the name is Z50II (and not Mark II because they aren’t as cool as Canon). Stands to reason really, Nikon is attempting to hit the home run by repeating the formulae of the near-legendary selling camera from Canon, the M50. Heck, it even looks like it.
As DCW mentions, no one really followed Nikon’s approach of Z[Space][Number] anyway, and if you search on the internet, you find many more hits without the space than you do with the space. Also as DWC mentions, hashtags were especially problematic.
This was probably a very costly tactical mistake for Nikon because it literally split up reviews and search engine hits between the two formats. So finally someone at Nikon woke up and went, why are we fighting against everyone else here? It’s still going to be a large legacy issue out there with tons of articles, etc written up with the old format of naming convention.
I expect the Z50 II to sell well for Nikon, it’s a good little camera, and even though it seems to be priced a little high, this class of cameras always get bundles and rebates/sales as time passes.
