Remo Stars returned to the top of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) table, yesterday, with a 1-0 defeat of Lobi Stars on a day former leaders, Rivers United, were beaten 2-0 by Ikorodu City in Lagos.
Remo Stars led the table in the first four weeks of the season before Rivers United went on an unbeaten run that saw them overtaking everybody to lead the title chase. That changed yesterday with Remo Stars recording a hard-fought victory over Lobi Stars, now coached by former Super Eagles striker, Daniel Amokachi.
Michael Okoro Ibe was the hero for the Ikenne boys, who are now leading the table with a superior goals difference to Rivers United, who have the same 21 points from 10 matches as the Port Harcourt boys.
Rivers United were victims of Ikorodu Cityโs newfound form as the Lagos boys have won all their home games since losing to Enugu Rangers in week six.
Ayomide Cole opened scores for Ikorodu City in the 48th, while Rivio Ayemwemre made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute to take the Lagos boys to the 17th position.
In other matches, third-placed Enyimba drew 1-1 with Bayelsa United in Yenagoa, Niger Tornadoes defeated Shooting Stars 2-0, the same result Enugu Rangers recorded against Nasarawa United in Enugu.
The surprise results of the week were recorded in Ijebu Ode and Umuahia, where Bendel Insurance beat Sunshine Stars 1-0 and Heartland defeated Abia Warriors 2-0 respectively.
But it was business as usual in Kano as Pillars beat Plateau United 2-1, the same result recorded by Akwa United against Kwara United in Ilorin.
President Federation Cup champions, El Kanemi Warriors, defeated Katsina United 1-0 to move up to the fourth position with 16 points from 10 matches.
