Valeriana is an old Mayan city. Scientists find it under the jungle in Mexico.
The city is very large. There are pyramids and sports fields. And other buildings. Archaeologists think that around 50,000 people live there in the 9th century. Scientists use radar, which helps them see through the trees. Valeriana is now the second-biggest Mayan site after Calakmul.
The Mayan people build big temples and beautiful buildings. But wars and disease made their civilization weak. The Mayan civilization ends a long time ago, but some Mayan people still live close to this area today.
Difficult words: archaeologist (a person who studies old buildings and things), century (one hundred years), temple (a building where people talk to a God).
