HOMESTEAD, PA — Plans that could involve additions such as restaurants, hotels and apartments at The Waterfront are tied to an ambitious multimillion-dollar renovation of the AMC Waterfront 22 next year.
AMC Theatres has announced it has signed a long-term lease extension for the 22-screen theater, which has been an anchor at The Waterfront since the complex opened in 1999. With the new lease in place, AMC will remodel the the theater and put in larger seats, an AMC MacGuffins bar offering craft beers, wine and cocktails. The theater also will be refreshed with new painting and carpeting.
While the theater will keep all 22 screens, the larger seats that will be wider and recline means the number of seats overall will drop from 4,000 to 2,000.
Because the theater’s overall capacity will drop, fewer parking spaces around the multiplex will be needed. That will free up as much as 1.5 acres of land between the theater and Costco for development.
M&J Wilkow, which owns The Waterfront, has not announced any specifics for the soon-to-be available property. The site is close to where a new residential complex with about 300 units is about to be built.
