A woman is igniting viral conversation after sharing that, after a disastrous Thanksgiving dinner last year — one in which her in-laws took home all the leftovers for themselves — she’s decided not to host this year.

In a post shared to Reddit, the 30-year-old anonymous woman writes that she and her husband hosted his parents last year for Thanksgiving. In her view, it did not go well.

“It was a disaster,” she writes.

She adds that, as a nurse who works nights, she “was exhausted” and “was late making dinner,” leading her husband’s grandparents to go get fast food.

Her husband’s mother, meanwhile, “was supposed to bring three sides but she ended up bringing one frozen meatloaf that was about six inches long to feed 9 people.”

“Essentially, she brought nothing to share,” the woman adds in the post.

At the end of the meal, the woman says her husband’s family “packed up all of our food and took it with them.”

“We were under the impression they were putting the food in our fridge [because] that’s what they said they were doing,” she adds. “We had absolutely no leftovers.”

Since then, the woman writes that she has worked hard to foster a stronger relationship with her mother-in-law, even bringing her food after her own mother died, and buying her a dress to wear to the funeral. Yet her mother-in-law remains “standoffish.”

“I don’t know why, I’ve run myself ragged to take care of her,” the woman adds.

Recently, the mother-in-law called to ask about this year’s Thanksgiving dinner — and the woman told her she wouldn’t be hosting.

“I told her I wasn’t cooking. I was tired, I work a lot (50 hours a week) and I don’t appreciate people taking food they didn’t cook out of my kitchen,” she writes. “She immediately started crying and telling me she lost her best friend, it’s the first holiday season without her mom, she’s sad, she’s lonely. I told her tough luck. I’m tired of being taken for granted.”

Commenters have weighed in, with one Reddit user suggesting the woman’s husband “volunteer himself to cook and host…. Or shut up… preferably at her house… so she can deal with the mess and you just have to pack the leftovers to take home.”

Another chimed in: “This is a husband problem. How dare he stay out of dealing with his mother? How dare he expect you to cook? I think you shouldn’t forbid him from hosting, but he needs to understand that of course you‘re not the one to cook and clean for his event.”
