Two people have been injured after a light aircraft crashed in a veld near Lesedi, about 56km south-east of Johannesburg, on Saturday afternoon.
The aircraft, a PA 28 Cherokee, had taken off from Lanseria International Airport on a routine training flight when the incident took place about 100km from the airport.
The airport’s CEO, Rampa Rammopo, said emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they provided assistance to the two individuals on board.
He said the occupants were airlifted to a nearby medical facility, adding that one was critical and the other was in a serious condition.
“At present, we do not have confirmed information on the cause of the incident. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is en route to the scene to commence a full investigation. Lanseria International Airport is cooperating fully with the SACAA officials as they work to determine the cause of the accident,” said Rammopo.
He added that the airport remained operational after the incident.
“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” he said.
