Last night, the USA men’s national soccer team met Jamaica on the road in Kingston for the first leg of a Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal. On Monday, we published a poll to get readers’ picks for the starting lineup.
Here’s the roster readers were choosing from. Tim Weah was suspended and unavailable for this match, but is on the roster and will be available for the second leg back in St. Louis.
GOALKEEPERS (4): Diego Kochen (FC Barcelona), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew), Zack Steffen (Colorado Rapids), Matt Turner (Crystal Palace)
DEFENDERS (7): Mark McKenzie (Toulouse), Tim Ream (Charlotte FC), Chris Richards (Crystal Palace), Antonee Robinson (Fulham FC), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati), Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Auston Trusty (Celtic FC)
MIDFIELDERS (8): Brenden Aaronson (Leeds United), Gianluca Busio (Venezia), Johnny Cardoso (Real Betis), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Aidan Morris (Middlesbrough), Yunus Musah (AC Milan), Tanner Tessmann (Olympique Lyon), Malik Tillman (PSV Eindhoven)
FORWARDS (5): Cade Cowell (Guadalajara),Ricardo Pepi (PSV Eindhoven), Christian Pulisic (AC Milan), Brandon Vazquez (Monterrey), Alex Zendejas (Club América)
After receiving 582 responses, let’s look at the results!
Now let’s look at the polling trends over time. In goal, Matt Turner has been up and down since the tail end of Copa America, but regained his #1 spot for this competitive match. The 35 readers who picked Zack Steffen have been banned from future polls (that’s a joke).
Across the back line, Antonee Robinson, Joe Scally, and Chris Richards were clear picks, with Mark McKenzie taking the last spot. Of course, in the shape Pochettino has been deploying, Scally is lining up as a RCB in a back three, with Jedi pushed up as a LM/LWB in the middle line of four.
Johnny Cardoso joins Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah in readers’ preferred midfield. With Pochettino’s 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 shape, Musah has been deployed wide on the right side, opposite Antonee Robinson.
The front three of Pulisic, Pepi, and Malik Tillman were fairly straightforward, with Brenden Aaronson the next choice after Tillman.
