Frank Lampard is set to hold talks with Coventry in the coming days as the Championship club work through their shortlist to succeed Mark Robins.

The former Chelsea player and manager is among a handful of contenders for the post after owner Doug King and his advisors whittled down their initial roll call of about 70 applicants.

Though a strong contender, Lampard is not the only name under serious consideration with King favouring a head coach rather than a manager – with Robins fulfilling the latter role during his seven-and-a-half years in charge. King is also mulling the idea of appointing a sporting director.

King was due to speak to a mixture of British and overseas coaches before making his final decision. He will also take advice from performance director Dr Claire-Marie Roberts and head of recruitment Dean Austin.

Lee Carsley, who is due to return to coach England Under-21s after leading the seniors in the Nations League, has been linked with the post along with former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy left Old Trafford earlier this week following the arrival of new boss Ruben Amorim.

Lampard took Derby to within 90 minutes of promotion via the play-offs in 2018-19, his only season in the Championship. Since then he has had two spells in charge of Chelsea, either side of a year at Everton.

Speaking earlier this week, King said: ‘We’ve received a huge amount of CVs from high-quality people, of which Frank is one.

‘We’ve done nothing on that process … but clearly we’re in the international break, we’ll be assessing everything. We’ll work out who’s going to make the shortlist and we’ll go from there.’
