What to Stream This Weekend

When it comes to streaming video, the content pile is vast, and you’ve got the whole weekend to decide how you want to slice it. There are now too many shows and movies to choose from, spread across too many video-streaming services. We make it easy for you. Each week, we highlight the streaming content we’re excited to watch or think you should binge. Fire up your media-streaming device of choice and start watching.

Dune: Prophecy (Max)

Full disclosure: I’ve never watched Dune and probably won’t. (Sorry, Zendaya). But the nerds seem to like it, and Max has a new series set in the Dune universe that “follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.” Sure, why not?

Cross (Prime Video)

Need another police drama in your life? Aldis Hodge is the latest actor to take on the role of Alex Cross, the D.C. forensic psychologist and detective from author James Patterson. In season one, Cross tracks a serial killer and fends off a threat from his past. Eight episodes are streaming now.

Twisters (Peacock)

Twisters brings together an adrenaline junkie YouTuber (Glen Powell) and researchers looking for ways to reduce the impact of massive tornados. A popcorn flick that doesn’t require much brain power, which may be what a lot of us need right about now.

Landman (Paramount+)

Landman is the latest from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, but instead of Kevin Costner on a Montana ranch, it’s Billy Bob Thornton out in the oil and gas fields (with an assist from Jon Hamm and Demi Moore). It’s based on the Boomtown podcast about the oil industry in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico. The first episode hits Paramount+ on Sunday, Nov. 17, with nine other episodes dropping weekly.

The Day of the Jackal (Peacock)

Eddie Redmayne is in his action era. In this 10-episode Peacock series, Redmayne is The Jackal, an elusive assassin who is now being hunted by a British intelligence officer. Based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel, the first five episodes are out now, with the rest of the episodes dropping weekly through Dec. 12.

Thelma (Hulu)

Scammers targeting the elderly is a familiar tale, but in this comical action movie, the victim fights back. After Thelma (June Squibb) loses thousands to a scammer, she hunts down the perpetrators with the help of her scooter and friend Ben (Richard Roundtree).

Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley (Netflix)

If you didn’t get enough of Elvis during last year’s award season, this Netflix documentary explores the push to revive his career following a string of lucrative but lackluster movies and music that didn’t really capture the spirit of the times. By 1968, with little to lose, Elvis staged a televised comeback special that put him and his black leather jumpsuit back in the spotlight.

Hot Frosty (Netflix)

“This is a ridiculous thing I will probably watch,” I texted my sister this week. Lacey Chabert has been freed from her chaste Hallmark shackles to partake in some slightly more risqué Christmas movie shenanigans. Here, Lacey plays Kathy, a widow who befriends a handsome ice sculpture that comes to life and helps her enjoy the holidays again.
