The new season isn’t all that old but already the Premier League standings are taking shape with a clear mini-league emerging. Here we look at the latest relegation odds.

Before we take a look at this season’s relegation possibilities, it’s important we have a recap of how last season unfolded at the bottom of the league. Rewind to this time last year-ish and Luton were massive favourites for the drop, Burnley boss Vincent Kompany was being linked with jobs at Chelsea and Tottenham and Sheffield United were the yo-yo club that should be better equipped to stay up than they last time they dropped from the league.
None of that played out. Sheffield United sold off their best players and went on to finish bottom with the worst defensive record in Premier League history. Kompany stayed loyal to both Burnley and his coaching philosophy of playing football “the right way” but his side made too many basic errors on their way to an underwhelming 19th placed finish and Luton fought valiantly given their budget but, ultimately, came up short in their battle for survival.

Ipswich shock Spurs to claim first win of campaign
Ipswich headed into their Sunday match up at Tottenham as the only club in the 92 to be without a win this season and, given Spurs’ home form, that looked likely to continue. The Blues started the match well though and were rewarded for a decent start when Sammie Szmodics netted an overhead kick to put the visitors 1-0 up. A rapid counter, which was finished off by Liam Delap, doubled that lead with Ipswich holding on for the three points despite conceding in the second half. Getting a win over the line for Kieran McKenna’s men could be huge in the context of their season – especially given the points lifted them out of the relegation zone.
Wolves win a wounds Saints
We’ve just mentioned Ipswich were winless until their win over Tottenham and it was a similar story for Wolves as they came into their Saturday clash with fellow relegation candidates Southampton. The Saints were hoping to build on their only win of the campaign, which had come a week earlier, however, they were soon brought back down to Earth as Wolves took a second minute lead. Southampton, as is becoming a trend, had plenty of the ball after that but failed to capitalise on the possession and another home goal after the break gave the hosts breathing space as they largely cruised to a win. The victory saw Wolves leapfrog their visitors, who fell to the bottom of the table, and the Saints now face a tough run of games with their next four being Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Wolves meanwhile have a run of games that they will consider to be winnable.
Glasner’s job at risk as Palace plunge
We started our look at the Premier League relegation race with Ipswich’s win that moved them out of the relegation zone, which means someone else had to drop into the bottom three. This time, the unlucky club was Crystal Palace. Oliver Glasner’s side were lacklustre in defeat to Fulham and the fact it was at Selhurst Park makes it all the more concerning. Palace fans must be scratching their heads too because they were flying under Glasner at the back end of last season. Things change quickly in football though and Glasner’s name is moving very close to the top of the sack race odds; with Villa and Newcastle up next before what feels like a massive game at Portman Road the Eagles really need to get some points on the board – and soon.
Everton and Leicester looking over their shoulders
Without getting too carried away, things were looking fairly rosy for Everton and Leicester prior to this weekend. Sure, Everton had lost at Southampton but they were sat four points ahead of the danger zone. Leicester had an even better margin than that too (5) having snatched a late draw at Ipswich the week before in questionable circumstances. Fast forward through a surprise Ipswich win and two games that saw the Toffees and Foxes fail to pick up maximum points and all of a sudden they are back in the mix and one game week where things go against them will put them in real trouble.

The general consensus amongst pundits is that the newly promoted clubs will struggle to maintain their status in the top flight come May. As for the order, Southampton are a good football team but a) give cheap goals away and b) don’t look like they’ve got enough goals in the side. Ipswich have a goalscorer in Liam Delap but they, like the Saints, are almost kamikaze at times at the back. That leaves Leicester. With how things have started though, you’d have to rank the Foxes ahead of the aforementioned duo in terms of their survival hopes. It would be remiss of us not to touch on Wolves and Crystal Palace given their place in the bottom three as things stand; Wolves we think have enough quality to put a string of results together and Palace are at real risk right now but we think they’ll be the first to make a managerial change, which could transform their fortunes hence we end up with the newly promoted trio falling back through the trapdoor.
