EXCLUSIVE: Amid great buzz around Queer, A24‘s queer romantic drama in which he stars opposite Daniel Craig, which promises to take his career to a whole new level, Drew Starkey is set to reteam with the studio on Onslaught, Adam Wingard’s new action-thriller for A24, Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company.
Starkey joins Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens and UFC Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira, who is still in talks. His role is under wraps, as is the logline, though we hear the film is in the vein of Wingard’s cult classics like The Guest and You’re Next. The writer of those films, Simon Barrett, reunites with him here.
Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce under their Ryder Picture Company banner alongside A24, Alexander Black for Lyrical Media, Wingard and Jeremy Platt under their new shingle Breakaway Civilization, and Barrett. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will exec produce alongside A24.
Lyrical Media and A24 will co-finance, with the latter handling the film’s worldwide release. Production begins this month.
Starkey plays Eugene Allerton, the love interest of Craig’s William Lee, in A24’s Queer, an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical novel from William S. Burroughs, which premiered to strong reviews out of Venice and hits theaters in limited release on November 27. Heat around the project has ensured that the actor will be in high demand going forward.
Breaking out with his starring role in Netflix’s top-ranking teen drama Outer Banks, which recently launched its fourth season and will wrap up with its fifth, Starkey’s other notable film credits include Amazon’s rom-com The Other Zoey, Hulu’s Hellraiser reboot, and Netflix’s The Devil All the Time, as well as Fox’s Love, Simon and The Hate U Give. Additional TV credits include Amazon’s The Terminal List, Netflix’s Ozark, and MTV’s Scream.
Starkey is represented by Gersh and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
