WHAT ABOUT THE JOSLIN SMITH FOUNDATION?

In June, Gayton McKenzie revealed that he would donate “100%” of his salary to the Joslin Smith Foundation, which he would establish to raise awareness of missing children.

The political leader has taken an active role in the search for the Saldanha Bay girl who disappeared from her home in Diazville on 19 February.

However, according to Minister of Social Development Sisi Tolashe, no such foundation exists.

When asked by  DA MP Liam Chad Jacobs in a recent parliamentary sitting Gayton’s foundation had been registered and was operational, Tolashe said: “The Joslin Smith Foundation is not registered as a non-profit organisation (NPO) in terms of sections 13 NPO Act and has not submitted any application for registration in terms of the Act administered by the Department of Social Development.

In his Facebook post, Gayton responded to the backlash of his “empty promise.” He posted: “The Joslin Smith Foundation does not yet exist, because we want to make sure we get it right and don’t just do it to please the members of other political parties who think this matter has anything to do with them.

He added: “It is a private, personal matter relating to my own funds and what I choose to do with my own money. To rush into the creation of any Foundation would be a mistake, and the obvious fact that it has not yet been registered does not mean that I have gone back on my undertaking to not benefit from my ministerial salary.

Gayton claimed that once the foundation was established, he would “interview for directors” as he hoped its work “could outlive me someday.”
