The Legislative Council Secretariat asked lawmakers to notify them seven days in advance if they intend to share snacks or drinks with their fellow colleagues to avoid food wastage.
Lawmakers generally share small bites with fellow colleagues, staff and the media at Legco meetings and it is also a tradition to treat others when a motion is passed.
A lawmaker, who wished to be unnamed, said that last Wednesday, two lawmakers who moved a motion shared egg tarts at the same time.
However, the generous gesture resulted in wastage as Business and Professionals Alliance chairman Lo Wai-kwok, pictured, brought homemade sweet soup and the Secretariat also prepared afternoon tea as usual.
The Secretariat issued a “warm reminder” while thanking them for sharing treats.
Another lawmaker explained that while it is normal to notify two to three days in advance, it is “quite strange to notify someone of a treat.”
But another legislator said that the Secretariat is already very busy, so giving advance notice is “a good thing.”
