India’s First: In-Flight Wi-Fi For Domestic Flights

The Ministry of Communications (Department of Telecommunications) recently took a groundbreaking step of amending the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules to allow in-flight Wi-Fi on all domestic flights.

This is a first for India and a remarkable moment for the telecom and tech industries in the country.

The amendment further clarifies that onboard passengers will be able to use internet services through WiFi only when electronic devices are permitted in the aircraft. This remains valid even when the aircraft attains an altitude of 3,000 metres in Indian airspace.

In order to prevent interference with terrestrial mobile networks, the government has required In-flight and Maritime Connectivity service providers to operate mobile communication services in aircraft at a minimum height of 3,000 metres in Indian airspace, as per the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules, 2018.

“Notwithstanding the minimum height in Indian airspace referred to in sub-rule (1), internet services through Wi-Fi in aircraft shall be made available when electronic devices are permitted to be used in the aircraft,” says the recently informed new rule by the authority.

The newly notified rule will be known as Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024.

Benefits to Passengers

The recent amendment to the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules, 2024, enabling in-flight Wi-Fi on all domestic flights, brings several benefits for passengers:

  • Enhanced Productivity: Passengers can stay connected to work emails, virtual meetings, and online tasks, turning flight time into productive hours.
  • Seamless Connectivity: By providing access to a network above 3,000 metres, travellers can stay connected with family, friends, and social media, improving the in-flight experience.
  • Entertainment Access: Passengers can stream music, and movies, or access online content, enhancing travel comfort on long flights.
  • Real-time Updates: Travellers can stay updated on connecting flights, hotel check-ins, or important notifications, reducing potential travel stress.
  • Improved Passenger Experience: This initiative aligns Indian flights with global standards, improving customer satisfaction and the appeal of flying within the country.

By lifting restrictions on in-flight connectivity, the government is fostering a more convenient, connected, and productive flying experience in India. Delhi Airport welcomes these amendments that improve passenger comfort and overall experience.
