To prevent avalanches on Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains, people used a 1950’s howitzer.
In combat, people used it as an anti-aircraft weapon, and now it is keeping a nearby village safe. The howitzer fires a shell which starts a small avalanche. These are safe and prevent too much snow build-up which could then result in a big, dangerous avalanche.
Difficult words: prevent (stop from happening), howitzer (a type of cannon which fires upwards), shell (bomb).
