26 Hong Kong pupils fall ill during study tour to Guangdong cities

Twenty-six students from a primary school in Hong Kong suffered from acute gastroenteritis during a study tour to cities in Guangdong province, health authorities reported on Monday.

The group was among the 116 pupils and 12 teachers from Tuen Mun’s Po Leung Kuk Hong Kong Taoist Association Yuen Yuen Primary School who went to Guangzhou and Foshan for a study tour on Friday and Saturday.

The Centre for Health Protection said 15 boys and 11 girls, aged 10 to 11, developed symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever.

A pupil began vomiting during the trip, with other students subsequently developing gastrointestinal symptoms.

While two affected pupils sought medical attention, none required hospitalisation, and all patients were in stable condition, according to the centre.

“The centre considers that the outbreak may be caused by person-to-person transmission or environmental contamination. Investigations are ongoing,” it said.
