A previously unknown waltz by Polish composer Frédéric Chopin has been found in the vault of the Morgan Library and Museum in New York.

The manuscript, dated between 1830 and 1835, was uncovered by curator Robinson McClellan, who collaborated with a Chopin expert to verify its authenticity and brought excitement to music lovers and historians. The waltz is short, spanning only 24 bars, and includes Chopin’s distinct melodic style and harmonic richness.

Noted conductor and composer Debbie Wiseman suggested that, given its brevity, it might have been a personal gift Chopin wrote for a friend. She highlights Chopin’s talent for creating memorable melodies, saying that this piece shows his unique ability to craft beauty in even the simplest forms. Chopin was known to give his friends short musical pieces as gifts, making this discovery even more special.

Difficult words: vault (a large underground room used for storage), manuscript (handwritten document), curator (a person who manages museum collections), brevity ().
