What Does Transgender Mean?
Transgender is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Transgender people can identify as male, female, neither male nor female, or a combination of male and female. They may also use terms like non-binary or genderqueer. A person that identifies as the gender they were assigned at birth is “cisgender”.
What do you Call a Transgender Parent?
Some Transgender parents stick with what they were called before, and some change it. The new title might be the usual mom/momma, dad/daddy, or more inventive ones like Mada, Moppa, Maddy, Parent, or any number of possibilities.
What does this all have to do with the First Sunday of November?
The first Sunday in November is Transgender Parents Day. Established in 2009 as an alternative to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it is a day to honor and recognize transgender parents. The day is a reminder that transgender (and all LGBTQ+ parents) should not be excluded from the conversations about parenting or denied access to parenting tools or resources. And, that these parents can provide strong, loving, and supportive environments to their children. It is also a day to celebrate the parents who continued to provide love and support of transgender (and all LGBTQ+) children.
