Riot says its League of Legends MMO has a “great direction” after the development reset

If you’ve been eagerly waiting for an update on the Riot Games League of Legends MMO, I’ve got some good news. While at the Worlds 2024 Grand Final, Riot co-founder and chief product officer Marc Merrill finally gave us something. It’s a tad cryptic, but after hearing that the MMO was being “reset” we’ve had very little to go on since. So if you’d been worried about the future of the LoL MMO, don’t be, because it’s going well.

Merrill sat down with Marc ‘Caedrel’ Lamont during the Worlds 2024 Grand Final, and the upcoming Riot MMO was brought up. Lamont’s chat was spamming “MMO” over and over again, with Caedrel finally asking Merrill if he had anything he can say about the League of Legends spinoff.

“We’re working hard on it,” Merrill says. “It’s the project I’ve spent, personally, the most amount of time on. I really think the team has a great direction now and is making a lot of momentum. It’s something where we know the expectations that we have, and we’re going to try not to disappoint.” You can hear Merrill’s statement at around the 4:20:00 mark in the stream below.

We’ve all been eager to hear more about the upcoming LoL MMO ever since Riot said it was “resetting” development earlier this year. Merrill added at the time, “The initial vision just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today. We don’t believe you all want an MMO that you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint.” That means we’ll be waiting quite some time to see the LoL MMO in action, even if a new Riot job listing indicates that the project is still very much alive.

Merrill also assured us in 2023 that the MMO was still on track after the game’s producer, Greg Street, announced that they were leaving Riot. “We believe in this game and the team working on it,” Merrill explained. “If we look at development as a race, Greg has run an amazing first leg with an incredible team, and I know whoever takes the baton next will be set up for success going forward.”

While it’s going to be a long road until we learn more about the LoL MMO, that’s for the best. FF14 and WoW still reign supreme across the genre, and there are plenty of new additions like Throne and Liberty and New World Aeternum coming out. If Riot wants to get its LoL MMO right, it should take all the time it needs.
