BUCKTOWN — A popular Mexican restaurant on the Bucktown-Logan Square border known for its gourmet tacos and quesadillas is closing this month.
Taqueria Chingón, 2234 N. Western Ave., will close Nov. 26, the restaurant announced in an Instagram post Friday morning.
The closure won’t be permanent, however. The taqueria will reopen elsewhere, although no details have been nailed down, according to the post.
“Trust us when we say we will be back, more Chingón than ever. We just need to rest, retool, and find a space that will suit our needs better. Until then, please support your local small businesses!” the post reads. “It is harder than ever to survive, and if we don’t support our amazing community and entrepreneurs, we will be left with a bunch of soul-less chain restaurants and stores ran by people who don’t know or care about what it means to be a Chicagoan.”
The decision to close comes four years after partners Marcos Ascencio and Oliver Poilevey — who is also an owner of French restaurants Le Bouchon and Obelix — opened the taco spot in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ascencio and Poilevey also opened Mariscos San Pedro this summer on the ground floor of Thalia Hall in Pilsen.
After launching in late 2020, Taqueria Chingón quickly became known for tacos served with a hefty portion of asada, pastor and other toppings, as well as rotating specials. The restaurant was one of several buzzy spots to open along Western Avenue in recent years, including Chef’s Special and Allez Cafe.
Rising costs and other factors led management to end the taco spot’s current chapter, they said on Instagram.
“Wasn’t an easy decision, but the upcoming winter paired with rising cost of doing business in Chicago put us in a place where we didn’t think we would be able to recover from,” the Instagram post reads.
Owners did not immediately return a request for comment Friday morning.
Taqueria Chingón is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sundays.
