There’s something about building your own successful settlement in the medieval era that’s utterly compelling to many of us. From Banished to Manor Lords, Bellwright to Norland, managing your own nascent city state is something that it seems plenty of us desperately want. Settlements Rising is another to enter the fray, and it’s brought with it some new ideas that should ensure it’s unlike anything else in the genre – and it just got even better thanks to a big new feature.

The version 0.6.2 update for Settlements Rising has two main big new additions for the city-building game. One is definitely more behind-the-scenes, but should impact upon pretty much every aspect of the title. Prior to this patch if you wanted to change any settings that affect your current game, you would need to restart everything even if you only wanted to nudge something small. Now, you can adjust things on the fly, giving control completely to the player.

Options like fog of war, the way enhancement cards (occasional bonuses you can choose between to gain a buff) work, the frequency of raids, production speed, and fires can all be tweaked in the middle of a game without having to start over. So if you get something wrong or prefer to play a different way, you can more easily make those changes. Some options are still locked behind a restart, such as those related to world generation, but offering this level of flexibility is a big leap forward for the title.

My favorite part of this patch, however, is something that should still have an impact, but probably less of a monumental one. A new building called the pickle workshop is now available to you. If you couldn’t tell by the name, it’s a place where greens can be turned into pickles. These vinegary treats will last over twice as long as their unpickled counterparts, so your people will have lots of crunchy snacks to keep them going through the long winter months.

The version 0.6.2 patch for Settlements Rising is out now. If you want to learn more about it, and check out the pickle workshop for yourself, head over to Steam to get the full lowdown.
