USMNT weekend viewing guide: Elect to watch some soccer


Around Europe the USMNT is still dealing with a number of injuries but things aren’t all bad either. In Italy Tim Weah and Weston McKennie are showing that they can find the net just the same as Christian Pulisic. Meanwhile, Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman both scored for PSV. Elsewhere, Joe Scally is showing some positional flexibility, Jordan Pefok is seeing consistent time, and Cameron Carter-Vickers has injury news of a more positive sort as he’s finally back in a starting lineup. We’ve got all that and more for you this weekend:

Friday

Lille v Olympique Lyon – 4p on beIN Sports

Tanner Tessman started and played 90’ for Lyon on Sunday as the club drew with Auxerre 2-2. With the draw Lyon sit in seventh place, nine points back of league leading PSG as they head into a matchup with fourth place Lille who have not lost in League One since mid September.

Saturday

Bayern Munich v Union Berlin – 10:30a on ESPN+

Jordan Pefok got the start and went 90’ for Union Berlin on Wednesday in Pokal action against 3 Liga Arminia Bielefeld but the team fell 2-0 and ended their cup run. Pefok has appeared in every league match for Berlin so far this season, including three starts, but is still looking for his first goal of the season.

Wolfsburg v Augsburg – 10:30a on ESPN+

Kevin Paredes has returned to training but may be a week or two away yet for a Wolfsburg side that defeated Borussia Dortmund in extra time of Pokal action on Tuesday.

Holstein Kiel v Heidenheim – 10:30a on ESPN+

Lennard Maloney and Heidenheim will look to bounce back from their 2-1 Pokal defeat to Hertha Berlin on Wednesday when they face Holstein Kiel on Saturday morning.

Bournemouth v Manchester City – 11a on Peacock

Tyler Adams is back in action, seeing 9’ minutes off the bench last Saturday against Aston Villa as Bournemouth came back for the win. Adams and Bournemouth are now in eleventh place and will have their hands full this weekend against Manchester City.

Leeds United v Plymouth Argyle – 11a on Paramount+

Brenden Aaronson went 90’ in a scoreless draw for Leeds last weekend that keep them tied for second place in the Championship. This weekend they face a Plymouth Argyle side that are flirting with the relegation zone.

Udinese v Juventus – 1p on Paramount+

Tim Weah and Weston McKennie each scored for Juventus on Wednesday, with Weah assisting McKennie’s goal off a corner but Juventus had to settle for a draw with Parma and remain seven points back of league leading Napoli.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Crystal Palace – 1:30p on NBC

Chris Richards is eyeing a return to training next week but remains out this weekend. Matt Turner was between the sticks for Palace in the teams 2-1 win over Aston Villa in EFL Cup action, his first minutes of the season, but will presumably return to the bench this weekend as his club resume league play with a matchup against Wolverhampton.

Borussia Dortmund v RB Leipzig – 1:30p on ESPN+

Cole Campbell made his Borussia Dortmund debut last weekend in the teams 2-1 loss to Augsburg and then got 43’ minutes off the bench midweek in the teams extra time loss to Wolfsburg. Gio Reyna remains out injured as the team head into their matchup with ab RB Leipzig side that are tied on points with league leading Bayern Munich.

Celtic v Aberdeen – 1:30p on Paramount+

Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers both got the start for Celtic on Wednesday with Carter-Vickers donning the captains armband in his first full match back from injury. It’s a Scottish League cup matchup for the team this weekend as they face an Aberdeen side that are tied with atop the league table.

Ajax v PSV – 1:45p on ESPN+

Ricardo Pepi picked up the start and a pair of goals last weekend as PSV thrashed PEC Zwolle 6-0 with Malik Tillman also getting on the scoresheet. Richie Ledezma was not able to get in on the party as he was an unused substitute. PSV have an eight point lead at the top of the league table and this weekend face second place, and top rival, Ajax.

Monza v Milan – 3:45p on Paramount+

AC Milan elected to rotate the squad midweek against first place Napoli as Yunus Musah got the start but Christian Pulisic came in off the bench. Milan gave up two first half goals and Napoli didn’t look back as they strengthened their hold on the top position.

Sunday

Toulouse v Reims – 9a on beIN Sports

Mark McKenzie and Toulouse handled last place Montpellier 3-0 last weekend to move into 14th place, three points clear of the relegation zone. They face sixth place Reims on Sunday who are coming off back-to-back 2-1 losses.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Werder Bremen 11:30a on ESPN+

Joe Scally has started the past two Gladbach matches on the left side, showing a bit of positional flexibility, and has started every match for Gladbach to start the season. The team is in eleventh place and facing a Werder Bremen side coming off a 1-0 win in the German Cup, and a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

Inter Milan v Venezia – 2:45p on Paramount+

Gianluca Busio started and played 74’ as Venezia came from two goals back to win 3-2 last weekend against Udinese, picking up their second win of the season and moving within a point of safety. They will have their hands full this weekend against an Inter side looking to defend their title campaign from a season ago.
