The USWNT took on Iceland in the second match between the teams in this international window. This time Stelpurnar okkar pulled ahead in the 31st minute and hung onto a lead until 18 minutes before the end of regulation. It would once again be the substitutes making a difference for the USA as Lynn Williams drew the teams even in the 72nd and captain Lindsey Horan put the team ahead four minutes later. A stoppage time goal from Emma Sears put the game away in the third minute after regulation.
The pre-match festivities included fans celebrating the career of Kelley O’Hara who had been a solid presence on the team for the better part of a decade. Along with a pair of World Cups, O’Hara showed the world that Fayette County, Georgia is not to be trifled with.
A not exactly first choice lineup took the field for the start of the match as Casey Murphy got a start between the sticks and Emily Sams lined up in defense with Olivia Moultrie also getting into the initial XI.
Iceland would strike first in shocking fashion as an olympico from none other than Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir found the net in the 31st minute.
Iceland took that lead and defended it like a scavenged whale carcass waiting to be flensed and did pretty well for their trouble. It took 41 minutes and a slew of substitutes for the USA to come back.
Lynn Williams broke through for the Americans thanks to… well Sophia Smith scuffing a shot that was recovered by Emma Sears who passed to Williams. The forward drove a low shot into the goal to bring the score level.
Williams would play a role in the second goal as well with an assist on, you guessed it, a set piece put the Stars and Stripes on top 2-1. This time it was Lindsey Horan with the effort on goal.
Just to ensure a tidy score line, forward Emma Sears scored on her debut to make the final tally 3-1.
The USA will conclude their international friendlies taking on Argentina this Wednesday before everyone goes trick-or-treating the next day.
