Mainland coffeehouse feeling lucky

An upcoming second branch of Luckin Coffee has been spotted at Metro City Plaza Central in Tseung Kwan O after its first location in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Mira Place shopping mall sparked a frenzy of online chatter, with the largest mainland coffee chain seemingly showing confidence in expanding its services to Hong Kong.

Both branches are under renovation with boards saying they are “coming soon,” and will be competing for business with Starbucks in the same shopping malls.

The coffee chain’s second branch drew people’s attention after a netizen posted a photo of the shop surrounded by boards on social media.

Some people have claimed to have tried Luckin Coffee when traveling to the mainland, saying the coffee is cheaper with acceptable quality.

But some also expressed worry about whether the coffee chain will be able to afford expensive rents in Hong Kong.
