STRATFORD, CT — Stratford Mayor Laura R. Hoydick is denouncing comments that were made on the national stage at former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York regarding Puerto Rico.
Hoydick released the following statement on social media on Tuesday:
“Stratford is a community where we celebrate the tremendous value the Hispanic culture, and all ethnicities, contribute to make up the vibrant tapestry of our Town. We embrace and honor our Hispanic heritage through events and traditions, including Hispanic Heritage Month and the Latin Music Festival. Our Town recognizes the contributions made by our Hispanic population and help bring us together and expand our understanding of one another.
“Therefore, it is with deep concern and disappointment that we witnessed the denigration of Puerto Rico, its people, and culture on a national stage this past Sunday. Such actions undermine the values of respect and understanding that we hold dear, tarnishing the image of our nation, and communities such as ours here in Stratford, as welcoming and inclusive. We denounce any remarks that are derogatory to our Hispanic population and the many ethnicities that we value as part of our wonderful community.
“As a Town, we stand united in our commitment to continue fostering our community where every individual, regardless of their background, feels valued, respected, and empowered. – Mayor Laura R. Hoydick”
