When it comes to football, I'm very much a regular in the stands, but amongst the handful of games that I've watched from home, I've seen this happen far more often than not. The home team always starts on the left of the screen and the away team on the right. I noticed this mainly during the last World Cup.
A guy from my work brought this up today and I couldn't disagree with him. Instead, I myself started to wonder if the coin tosses before kick-off also decide which side of the pitch the camera gets placed at. The guy further went on to explain that this is all part of a broadcasting/marketing strategy, but I'm sure there's a better explanation to this, if that's actually not it.
