Two Postmedia journalists have been honoured with Jack Webster Awards for their reporting.
The Vancouver Sun and Province reporters Gordon Hoekstra and Lori Culbert were named winners at a Monday evening awards event at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Vancouver.
Hoekstra won in the category of Best News Reporting of the Year (Print/Digital) for his story on the B.C. trucking industry and why there have been several truck strikes on overpasses and bridges since 2021. The month after Hoekstra’s story was published, the B.C. government introduced stiff new measures to penalize commercial truck drivers who hit public infrastructure.
Culbert won in the category of Excellence in Investigative & Enterprise Journalism for her stories on the overdose death of University of Victoria student Sidney McIntyre-Starko in a dorm. Within days of Culbert’s story being published, the provincial government promised changes such as bringing in nasal naloxone and introducing mandatory CPR training to high school curriculum.
