PITTSBURGH, PA — Major changes are coming to Point State Park, Market Square and a portion of the Cultural District as part of the $600 million Downtown makeover of Downtown Pittsburgh announced Friday.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Mayor Ed Gainey, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato and other dignitaries unveiled the plan, which is centered around the conversion of seven commercial office spaces into 893 residential units and a hotel.
But the project also will include significant upgrades for two Downtown spaces traditionally used for recreational activities and the creation of a new one.
Expect a $25 million series of short- and longer-term projects designed to improve pedestrian access to the park, update the lighting at its iconic fountain and add recreational activities to the lawn area across from the Wyndham Grand hotel. Shorter term projects on walkways and fountains should be completed in time for the 2026 NFL Draft that will be hosted in Pittsburgh.
Market Square and Liberty Avenue Medians
More than $30 million will fund a major renovation of Market Square and the Liberty Avenue medians. The improvements will include adding benches and tables for visitors, expanding dining spaces and building capacity to host more events and markets. The median project is seen as a way to connect Point State Park to Market Square.
8th Street Block Civic Space
Led by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, this $30 million project will convert underused parking lots and open space in the Cultural District into a new outdoor destination. The space will host festivals and performances on its main lawn with a bandshell, provide amenities like a family play area and restrooms, and offer green space and public art for everyday recreation and exploration.
