Emergency services are attending the wreckage of a fatal plane crash at two sites in Sydney’s south-west.
Two light planes are understood to have collided and crashed before midday on Saturday at Belimbla Park near The Oaks, in Sydney’s outer south-west.
Police have described the crash as fatal but have not yet confirmed how many people were on either aircraft or if anyone survived as they are struggling to access one of the crash sites.
First responders received reports of the crash about 11.50am and established two crime scenes.
The crash sites are near two flying schools, Sydney Recreational Flying Club and Dave’s Flying School, both in The Oaks. However, it is unknown whether the crashed planes were associated with either of these schools.
NSW Police, Fire and Rescue and NSW Ambulance are attending the scene, with at least two fire trucks and several ambulances present.
Witness Bernadette Elliot, 48, said she saw one of the planes involved in the crash nosedive into the bushland in Belimbla Park from a property nearby.
She recalled hearing a “popping sound like a firecracker” and saw smoke come from a yellow and black plane before it nosedived.
Elliot said she also saw a man suspended from a bright green parachute in the air close to where the planes crashed. She described the whole scene as “shocking”.
