Euro 24 Football Language Phrase Day 30: Super Sub
Day 30 saw the second semi final between England and The Netherlands. The phrase we chose for this game is super sub. Super Sub
The second semi final at Euro 2024 saw England take on The Netherlands, and it finished the same score as the semi final the day before – 2-1. A dramatic late winner by Ollie Watkins saw England come from behind to defeat the Dutch.
Watkins came off the bench in the 81st minute and the first time he received the ball was in the Netherland’s box in the 90th minute. He controlled the ball and drilled it home for the winner.
A player who comes on as a substitute late in the game and scores a dramatic winner or equaliser is often called a super sub. Usually the substitute is not brought on to replace an injured player, but to make a tactical difference. In last night’s game, Watkins replaced a tiring Kane, and the manager hoped he could run in behind the Dutch defenders.
He did that to great effect!
