I couldn’t believe my eyes as I wandered through IKEA’s soft toy section. There, perched among the bins was Hedwig from Harry Potter. It was then I realized I was staring at IKEA’s new SKOGSDUVA snowy owl hand puppet. The resemblance to Harry’s faithful feathered companion was uncanny.
While it might not deliver Hogwarts acceptance letters, it certainly brought a touch of magic to my shopping trip. With its fluffy white feathers and expressive eyes, this soft, cuddly version of Hedwig seems to have flown straight from the pages of J.K. Rowling’s beloved series. Designed as a hand puppet, the IKEA owl is ideal for storytelling and imaginative play.
And a perfect companion to your kid’s Harry Potter costume.
IKEA SKOGSDUVA Magical Forest Collection
The snowy owl is part of the SKOGSDUVA, a new children’s collection inspired by the magical Swedish forest. The collection, featuring 20 educational, inspirational, and practical products aims to infuse everyday routines with play and imagination.
“The SKOGSDUVA collection is inspired by my childhood when I created imaginary worlds outdoors where different animals lived. I hope the products evoke children’s desire to explore and learn more about nature – even beyond the front door,” says Malin Gyllensvaan, designer of the SKOGDSDUVA collection.
Toys and More
Besides soft toys and hand puppets, the SKOGSDUVA collection includes Swedish wildlife-inspired duvet covers, bath towels, storage boxes and bins with animals, insects and plant designs. With SKOGSDUVA, IKEA aspires for children to explore nature and feel like they can make these animals come to life in their room, too.
Not just during their playtime but also during the everyday life as SKOGSDUVA inspires to spark play in the everyday routine, making bathtime even more fun by letting children ‘turn into a lynx’ with the lynx towel hood or using the soft toy animals and illustrative bed covers for storytelling before going to sleep.
Raise Awareness About The Swedish Red List
But the SKOGSDUVA isn’t just about play – it carries a deeper message. Many of the featured animals are inspired by species on the Swedish Red List, a catalog of threatened wildlife compiled by the SLU Swedish Species Information Centre. Through playful design, IKEA aims to raise awareness about these at-risk animals and their habitats.
‘’Take, for example, the illustration on the bed covers that shows the animals out and about while the storage bag demonstrates the animals inside, going into hibernation. Another example is the hedgehog soft toy. When hedgehogs feel threatened, they raise their sharp spines and turn into prickly, round balls to protect their soft bellies.
The SKOGSDUVA hedgehog soft toy can also turn into a ball with the help of a touch-and-close fastening on its belly. Although the back looks sharp, the spines are smooth and do, of course, not sting,’’ says Anna Edlundh, IKEA Product Design Developer, IKEA of Sweden AB.
So, the next time you find yourself in IKEA, keep an eye out for these enchanting creatures. Who knows? You might just bring home a little piece of Hogwarts – or rather, a touch of Swedish woodland wonder – for your own aspiring wizard.
