Three cigarette companies, Philip Morris, British American Tobacco, and Japan Tobacco, will pay 23.6 billion dollars to end a big problem in Canada.
People sue the companies. They do not tell people that smoking is dangerous. But since the 1950s, everybody knows that smoking causes cancer. A court in Quebec says that the companies must pay 15 billion dollars to smokers. Their Canadian offices ask for help. They do not have so much money. Since 2019, the companies are talking about how to pay. But they still do not know how to share the money between them. They will decide in December 2024.
Difficult words: sue (to take someone to court), cancer (a disease when some parts of the body start to grow without control), share (to divide or give a part to others).
