SHELTON, CT — Salerno’s Apizza, an iconic Stratford pizzeria that closed last year after more than 75 years in business, has announced plans to open a new Shelton restaurant.
Owner Carlo Salerno announced the exciting news over the weekend on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
“We are working on moving to a brand new town, Shelton,” Salerno said on Facebook, “getting ready to start a new chapter with all of you.”
Salerno said he was unable to reveal the new restaurant’s exact location in Shelton at this time as it was still being negotiated, but promised the announcement would be coming soon.
“Once everything is confirmed, you’ll be the first to know,” Salerno said.
Salerno’s Apizza customers were saddened by the Stratford restaurant’s abrupt closing in July 2023 after the owner said he planned to close it down by his 80th birthday.
The Salerno family has owned and operated the pizzeria for 76 years.
Described by the owners as an old-fashioned “mom-and-pop” neighborhood pizzeria, Salerno’s Apizza was known for its plum tomato pie, specialty grinders and other baked Italian specialties since 1947.
The pizzeria briefly reopened for one day last summer and gave away free pizzas in celebration of Salerno’s retirement.
It is currently unclear if Salerno plans to continue his retirement once the new Shelton restaurant is open.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your incredible patience and continued support throughout this transition,” Salerno said. “We can’t wait to welcome you to our new home. Stay tuned for more updates, and we look forward to seeing you all soon!”
