Is it actually august already?! Wow! Well welcome to a new month at the Oakland Public Library! Summer Reading is wrapping up and back-to-school season has begun. We’re also celebrating Black August and Read A Romance Month with staff curated booklists. There are HUNDREDS of free events happening, so here are the highlights:
The End of Summer Celebration
This summer party at the West Oakland branch marks the end of #OPLSummer and the #SummerReadingChallenge. This Saturday, August 3rd from 11am-3pm, there’ll be free food, books, beverages, a backpack giveaway, and more! You’re last chance to log reading days and library activities is either August 6 or 16th (depending on age group). Winners will be contacted shortly afterward.
National Night Out
Annual National Night Out community celebrations take place on August 6th at four different library branches. Get your face painted at Piedmont Ave. then catch an evening violinist performance and grab some cookies! Elmhurst is throwing an ice cream social with games and a raffle. 81st Ave will have food, music, and games too! Melrose will have firefighters, a pinata, and face painting. So many choices!
Bay Area Manufacturing Careers
Learn all about the manufacturing industry and how to start a career in this sector! An expert will present and answer your questions about the growth of Bay Area manufacturing and careers in machining, industrial maintenance, welding, CAD, electronics on the 14th over zoom.
Herbalism Workshop
Natural remedy enthusiasts will be excited about our herbalism workshop at West Oakland on the 17th. Herbalist, Zalika Tyson, reveals the incredible potential of common ingredients.
BikeShare for All
Bay Wheels facilitates a biking workshop and helmet giveaway at César E. Chávez Branch also on the 17th. They will also give away free one-month Bay Wheels bike share membership (for 20 participants).
