A self-proclaimed Taoist priest has been jailed for life for murdering an intellectually impaired woman who died after being repeatedly assaulted as part of a series of “exorcism” rituals in Hong Kong five years ago.
Chinese medicine practitioner Dunsany Cheung Chi-choi, 54, was also sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting 21-year-old Ng Yan-yu by using a sex toy on her during one of the purported rituals at a Sai Kung village house before her death on September 2, 2019.
The mother of the deceased, housewife Ng Ma Yu-kang, 57, received the same penalty of 10 years for aiding and abetting Cheung by buying the sex toy for him.
The pair betrayed no emotions when the sentences were read to them.
Cheung, a tattooed man with a ponytail, was seen shaking his head slightly when the judge said his use of the sex toy on the victim represented “one of the worst indecent assaults” in the city’s recent history.
The court heard Cheung began attacking the young woman in February or March of 2018 in the name of driving out the evil spirits possessing her.
