Statement Win
The two North London teams Tottenham and Arsenal have both had recent statement wins. First, Tottenham travelled to Old Trafford and easily defeated Manchester United 3-0, while Arsenal comfortably beat French giants PSG 2-0 in the Champions League league phase. A statement win is when a team lays down a marker so that other teams take notice of them. So, for example, if a team has not defeated a top team for a while and then beats one easily we can say that it is a statement victory (or statement win). We can also use this phrase when a team wins in its own style – maybe a counter-attacking teams wins a game by playing a successful counter-attacking style. Both of these reasons could be used to describe Tottenham’s win at Old Trafford – they won well and also won the game by playing in their own high-pressing style.
