Vietnam’s Skyline Media Closes Multiple International Sales On ‘The Trophy Bride’, ‘The Sisters’, ‘Spirit Whisker’

EXCLUSIVE: Vietnam’s Skyline Media has closed multiple deals on its slate heading out of Busan’s Asian Contents and Film Market (ACFM), including sales of two titles to the U.S., highlighting the growing international market for Vietnamese movies.

The Trophy Bride, a comedy drama about a poor family attempting to fake their way into high society, has been sold to 3388 Films for the U.S., Canada and all EU European territories, as well as to Infinity Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand.

Scheduled for Vietnamese release on October 18, the film is directed by Vu Ngoc Dang and produced by Will Vu and Muse Films, following their successful collaboration on hit comedy drama Sister Sister 2

Current horror hit The Sisters, produced by ProductionQ, has been sold to Purple Plan for release in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, U.S. and Canada. The film, which was previously sold to MovieCloud in Taiwan and Westec Media in Cambodia and Laos, was released in Vietnam on September 20 and is currently the third highest-grossing Vietnamese horror film of all time with $3.8M.

Directed by Tran Huu Tan (The Soul Reaper), The Sisters is a twisted retelling of Tam Cam, the Vietnamese version of Cinderella and the country’s most controversial fairy tale.

In addition, Spirit Whisper, the sequel to hit horror Crimson Snout produced by 89s Group, has been sold to MovieCloud in Taiwan, following previous deals with Westec Media for Cambodia and Laos concluded in Filmart. Directed by Luu Thanh Luan, the film is about the deceased son of a wealthy family who suddenly comes back to life when a black cat jumps over his body. Vietnamese release is scheduled for November 22.

Skyline Media expects to close further deals on these and other titles on its slate in coming months, during which time it will be attending markets including the American Film Market (AFM) in Las Vegas in early November.

Horror titles on the company’s slate also include The Bride, a co-production between Thailand and Vietnam, directed by Lee Thongkham and produced by Hang Trinh, and The Soul Lantern a supernatural story inspired by a famous Vietnam folk tale from debut director Hoang Nam.

Skyline is also selling Vietnam-US action film Domino, directed by Tino Nguyen, about a young man who unravels his father’s criminal past and seeks vengeance in the underworld, and Song Luan’s comedy drama Once Upon A Time In Indochine, based on the true story of the Prince of Bac Lieu, renowned as the boldest and richest playboy in 1980s Southern Vietnam.
