PETALING JAYA: A teacher in Ipoh has been remanded for six days after he allegedly hugged and kissed a 12-year-old student.

Perak police chief Azizi Mat Aris said the 37-year-old suspect also allegedly sent indecent pictures to the victim’s mobile phone, Harian Metro reported.

Azizi said police received a report filed by the victim’s mother at 3pm last Friday after her daughter told her about the alleged sexual assault, with the teacher arrested early on Saturday morning.

He said the teacher is single and allegedly started sexually assaulting the victim when he joined the primary school eight months ago.

“The report we received only involves one victim. We are currently investigating if there are other victims.

“The suspect has no previous criminal or drug records.”

Azizi said the case is currently being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and caning upon conviction.

Yesterday, deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh said the ministry has transferred the teacher after finding out about the police report.
