The Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) Ltd in Rivers State has officially commenced crude oil processing, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector.
This development comes after several failed commencement deadlines.
According to Olufemi Soneye, spokesperson of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) , “Today marks a monumental achievement for Nigeria as the Port Harcourt Refinery officially commences crude oil processing.

The Tuesday statement added: “This groundbreaking milestone signifies a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation.”
Soneye congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and the exceptional leadership of Mele Kyari for their commitment to the project.
“Together, we are reshaping Nigeria’s energy future!” he exclaimed.
Truck loading is also set to commence today, with the NNPCL working to bring the Warri Refinery back online soon.
The rehabilitation exercise for the refinery, worth $1.5 billion, was approved by the Nigerian government in 2021.
