A former West Australian MP whose political career unravelled following a fake medals scandal has been left fighting for his life after allegedly being bashed at his work.
Barry Urban, whose lies about his qualifications and service history eventually landed him in jail, was attacked at Tyre Brigade in Kelmscott on Tuesday morning.
Witnesses told 9News Perth they overheard Urban in an argument with a customer about a “wheel alignment” about 8am, before the 55-year-old was allegedly knocked to the ground.
Emergency services arrived a short time later and rushed Urban to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is set to undergo emergency surgery for “critical injuries”.
Urban was once a member of the McGowan government, but revelations over lies he told about war medals which weren’t his led to his claims to have investigated war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina unravelling.

It was also revealed Urban had forged university degrees when he attempted to join WA Police, which, along with charges of providing false evidence to parliament, led to him being jailed for three years in 2021.
However, colleagues on Tuesday had nothing but kind words for Urban, describing him to 9News Perth as the “nicest guy”.
A 25-year-old man is assisting police with their investigation.
