Russian President Vladimir Putin has changed Russia’s nuclear doctrine in response to a broader range of conventional attacks.
Previously, Russia reserved nuclear weapons for situations threatening its existence. Now, it could respond to a ‘critical threat’ to its sovereignty or territory with nuclear force. This move coincides with reports that Ukraine used US-made missiles to strike deep into Russian territory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Putin’s focus on nuclear strategy over peace efforts, while analysts warn the new doctrine raises the risk of nuclear conflict. However, the US National Security Council stated it sees no need to adjust its nuclear policy.
As Moscow’s forces are advancing, some experts believe the war could be nearing its final, most dangerous stage. Western leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, condemned Russia’s rhetoric and promised continued support for Ukraine.
