Tens of thousands of people marched to New Zealand’s parliament, protesting a bill they believe threatens Indigenous Maori rights.
The Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 between the British Crown and over 500 Maori chiefs, is at the center of this debate. It guarantees Maori people land and cultural rights, which critics fear may be undermined by the proposed legislation. The bill was introduced by David Seymour, a junior coalition member of part-Maori descent, and it aims to reinterpret the treaty and end policies like affirmative action. Seymour argues this will promote equality for all New Zealanders. However, opponents accuse him of creating division and harming Maori communities.
Protesters, including non-Maori allies, marched over 1,000 kilometers to defend the treaty’s integrity, citing its importance for future generations. Though major coalition parties oppose the bill beyond its first reading, a referendum could still arise if enough voters petition for it. The debate reflects deeper tensions around New Zealand’s history and Indigenous rights.
