Edmonton has declared a citywide parking ban beginning Sunday evening at 7 p.m., the ban is put in place to ensure all roads are cleared of snow and are safe for all.
Phase 1 of the ban will focus on major roads, including arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes, and roads within business improvement areas.
This phase is expected to last for three to five days, with crews working 24 hours a day to clear snow and ice.
“This parking ban is necessary to ensure that major roadways are cleared efficiently and remain safe for all vehicles,” said Val Dacyk, General Supervisor of Infrastructure Field Operations. “We’ve seen significant snow accumulation and blowing snow over the past 24 hours, and keeping these major routes clear is essential to allow for safe driving conditions.”
During Phase 1, parking will be prohibited on affected roads until they are cleared. Drivers are advised that vehicles parked in the downtown area or on hills along arterial roads, collector roads, and bus routes may be ticketed and towed.
EPark zones will also be suspended during this phase.
Residential streets will not be affected by the Phase 1 ban, and parking is allowed on these streets unless otherwise posted. Once a road is cleared, parking is permitted again as long as it is typically allowed.
Edmontonians are urged to check the Roadways Snow Clearing Map for real-time updates on the clearing status of affected routes.
The City may issue a further announcement regarding Phase 2 of the parking ban if it extends to residential and industrial areas.
Motorists are reminded to drive according to road conditions, maintain a safe following distance, and be mindful of snow-clearing crews working around the clock.
