The FF14 and FF7 crossover feels closer than ever, as Rebirth’s director is up for it

There’s nothing in life I want more than a big Final Fantasy 14 and FF7 crossover. The Square Enix MMO already acts like a theme park for the series, with events bringing over other games like 16, 15, and most recently 11 with the new Dawntrail Alliance Raid – but I want more. Cloud and company need to take a trip to Eorzea, and I’m not alone in thinking so. FF14 director Naoki Yoshida has already said he’s up for it, and now FF7 Rebirth’s director expresses the same interest. So it’s only a matter of time.

At this point, there’s probably at least one reference to every game in the series in Final Fantasy 14. Someone at Square Enix has more than likely buried an easter egg deep in an item description or quest name, and we’ll find it years later. These references are one of my favorite parts of the MMO, so I’ll always be happy to see more of them.

One of the directors behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has very similar feelings, and makes it clear that it’s only a matter of time until that game comes over to FF14.

“I mean obviously there’s nothing specific planned at the moment, but I think it’d be a great idea, yes,” FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi tells GamesRadar in a new interview. “I get on very well with [Yoshida] myself. We both trust each other greatly. We often get together and discuss things like the future of the Final Fantasy series, etc. So I think because we do work so well together, there’s definitely a lot of things that could possibly come up along those lines. So yeah, I think it’d be really good.”

FF14 director Naoki Yoshida has made it clear that he wants to do a crossover with Final Fantasy 7 at some point, but now isn’t the right time. Yoshida would rather wait for the FF7 remake trilogy to wrap up, so both Square Enix teams can tackle the crossover (whatever it ends up being) with their full attention. So while we’ve got to wait a while for the final game in the FF7 remake trilogy to drop, hopefully the FF7 Rebirth PC release date isn’t that far off.

As anyone at PCGamesN will tell you, I’ve been clamoring for a 14 and 7 crossover for some time. We might have Cloud’s Advent Children outfit as a glam already, but I want more. Maybe we can do Mako Reactor 1 as the start of an Alliance Raid series, or fight a collection of FF7 bosses in eight-player raids? The possibilities are endless, but as long as it comes with mounts, weapons, and outfits I’ll be happy.

While the latest FF14 expansion wasn’t perfect, I adored my time in Tural, and can’t agree more with Ken’s Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail review. The dungeons are the best they’ve ever been, and the setup for the future has me asking far too many questions that I need answers to as soon as possible.

If you’re still in the midst of the MMO’s latest expansion make sure you know exactly how to get a free Final Fantasy 14 Fantasia, and don’t forget to grab all the Final Fantasy 14 Aether Currents either.
