Puerto Princesa City is set to kick off the Batang Pinoy 2024 National Championships today, November 23, bringing together more than 11,000 young athletes, coaches, and officials from across the Philippines, along with high-ranking government representatives, in what promises to be a landmark event.
Among the key officials expected to attend the opening ceremonies at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex are Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard Bachmann and other PSC officials. Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Juanito Victor Remulla and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara.
The opening will feature a colorful parade of delegations from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Beginning at the Palawan State University (PSU) campus at 4 p.m., the parade will proceed to the sports complex, showcasing the cultural diversity of each region. Delegates will carry banners and wear costumes representing their local identities.
“Ang bawat rehiyon ay magpapakita ng kanilang mga natatanging kultura sa parada, kaya tiyak na magiging makulay at masaya ang pagsisimula ng Batang Pinoy,” said Michie Meneses, host of Amos Ta Ren sa Puerto Princesa.
“Hinihikayat po namin ang lahat ng mga taga-Puerto Princesa na dumalo at masaksihan ang napakagandang event na ito,” she added.
Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron will deliver the welcome address during the ceremony, which will include performances by cultural groups, appearances by Batang Pinoy mascots, and a pyromusical display.
The event aims to celebrate the youth and their contributions to sports.
“This is not just about competition; it’s about camaraderie and pride for our regions and our nation,” said Meneses. “Napakagandang pagkakataon ito para maipakita ang galing ng mga kabataan natin at ang kagandahan ng lungsod ng Puerto Princesa.”
The Batang Pinoy National Championships will feature competitions in various sports, including swimming, gymnastics, basketball, archery, and more.
Local businesses, schools, and accommodations are working together to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for visitors. The Department of Education and city officials have also prepared facilities to support the influx of delegates.
The event will run until November 28, concluding with a closing ceremony at the Edward S. Hagedorn Coliseum. Organizers promise an exciting and memorable event for participants and attendees alike.
