In its push for more contactless payments in the Philippines, Beep has partnered with Mastercard to allow those commuting using the BGC bus to use their Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards as mode of payment. This upgrade involves upgrading terminals on BGC buses to support all forms of Mastercard products.
The added support for Mastercard gives BGC bus commuters more payment options as an added convenience. Aside from BGC Bus, AF Payments (parent company of Beep) President and CEO JJ Moreno told members of the media that they will add support for Mastercard products for MRT-3 and EDSA buses in the future. LRT-1 and LRT-2 will be covered as well at a later time.
Mastercard has enabled open loop transit systems in several major cities around the world such as London, Sydney, and Singapore, and is the first international payment network to enable ‘Tap & Go’ on public transport in Metro Manila.
This initiative supports the government’s push to accelerate digital payments across various sectors such as transport. It also reaffirms Mastercard’s commitment to advancing smart and inclusive mobility in the Philippines. By eliminating the need to carry cash or multiple transit tickets, it will simplify and enhance the commuting experience for Filipinos. “The Filipino commuter deserves no less than the global standard,” Moreno said during the presscon.
Aside from the added convenience, commuters will benefit from Mastercard’s range of cybersecurity features to protect themselves from card skimming and payment fraud. Over the past 5 years, Mastercard has invested $7 billion into cybersecurity and AI capabilities globally. “This pilot program exemplifies Mastercard’s commitment to delivering innovative transit solutions for Metro Manila, while also furthering the adoption of digital payments in the Philippines,” Mastercard Country Manager Simon Calasanz said.
