Flic, celebrated its 10th anniversary as a company specializing in smart home button controllers by making some updates to its Flic Hub. These updates give users a lot more freedom to program their smart hubs.
The updates to Flic include adding Matter to its smart home standard and adding more scripting capabilities. The update lets users program custom commands for Matter devices through FlicScript, a JavaScript-based scripting API. All current products under Flic have been updated to meet this Matter standard, which means much easier ways of having devices working together.
The ability to script custom commands through FlicScript is a huge improvement. This gives users a more tailored smart home, expanding beyond pre-programmed functionalities. Users can use the JavaScript-based API to create personalized automation and control different Matter-compatible devices. It’s a great way for a buyer to create a smart home space their way.
The company is also expanding the functionality of Flic’s existing Button and Twist controllers. The Flic Hub LR Controller now serves as a scriptable Matter controller, letting users create custom solutions for their smart home ecosystems much more easily. This builds upon Flic’s earlier launch of an independent Matter Controller this year.
Flic’s Matter update makes it an even better competitor against Amazon. Amazon Echo’s approach to the same smart home technology is very different. Echo relies on a powerful central hub and voice control, while Flic uses small, energy-efficient hardware like the Flic Hub Mini, which is controlled through buttons and now a scripting API (FlicScript).
Some buyers have chosen Flic because it focuses on longevity, has supported all its products for a decade, and integrates Matter across its entire range. Echo focuses on expanding its ecosystem with new devices, sometimes rendering older models less relevant. Flic gives a more minimalist, sustainable, and developer-friendly smart home solution than Amazon’s broader, voice-centric approach.
