Hong Kong government condemns red paint attack at headquarters

The Hong Kong government has condemned the throwing of a bottle filled with red paint at its headquarters, warning authorities will follow up on the attack.

Security personnel called police on Wednesday at about 7.40am after discovering red paint had been splashed near a flower bed at the headquarters in Tamar, Admiralty. Glass debris was also found at the scene.

A check of security footage revealed that an individual hurled a glass bottle from an adjacent footbridge at 8.24pm on Tuesday. The bottle shattered on impact, spreading red paint on the ground.

Police have classified the case as criminal damage.

Forty-five opposition politicians and activists were jailed on Tuesday for terms ranging from four years and two months to 10 years over their participation in a plot to overthrow the government in 2020.

The red paint attack also occurred the night before former media owner Jimmy Lai Chee-ying took the stand to defend himself in his national security case for the first time on Wednesday.
