Woman Fatally Stabbed, Off-Duty Detective Shot While Trying To Intervene In Portage Park Attack

PORTAGE PARK — A woman was fatally stabbed and an off-duty police detective was shot while trying to intervene in the attack Tuesday in Portage Park, according to authorities.

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, an off-duty Chicago police detective saw a woman being stabbed in the 5600 block of West Leland Avenue, police said.

The woman, who had been stabbed multiple times, was taken to Resurrection Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said.

The detective tried to intervene and fired shots at the woman’s attacker, police said. The off-duty officer was grazed by a bullet to his leg while trying to intervene. He was taken to Lutheran General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Langford and said.

Police are currently searching for the woman’s attacker, who fled the scene, police said.

The woman who was killed had received an order of protection against her attacker, who pleaded not guilty at his arrangement Monday, according to the Sun-Times.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was responding to the scene for an investigation.

Dariusz Potoczny lives around the corner from where the shooting took place. He said his neighbor told him he heard a gunshot, so Potoczny went outside. He saw a man he recognizes from the neighborhood and knows is a police officer being taken on a stretcher to an ambulance, Potoczny said.

By 3:37 p.m., more then a dozen neighbors had gathered to watch the scene, with the street blocked off as police investigated.

“It’s getting scary, the city,” Potoczny said.
